The smallestcountry is the vatican city, having an area of just 0.44 squarekilometers. it is situated within another country - italy.
 in the year 1870, the vatican was left in an uncertain situation when Rome itself was annexed by the italian forces. the popes did not accept the italian king's rule over Rome and refused to leave the confines of the city walls. However, in the year 1929, the popes were forced to give up power and concentrate on spiritual matters alone. Resultantly,  vatican city was declared a sovereign city state.
